KNOXVILLE KNOCKOUT: CJB Scores Back-to-Back Runner Up Finishes in Iowa
Nebraska & North Dakota stops are on the docket for the #5 team
CARLISLE, PA. - June 13, 2017 - Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway hosts the biggest sprint car race on the planet every August. Track time on this famed half-mile oval is a hot commodity for all teams and the CJB Motorsports organization is no exception. With the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series making a two-night stop at Knoxville, the #5 team seized the opportunity to add to their notebook for August.
The opening night of the Brownells Big Guns Bash was Friday, June 9th and the CJB team timed in seventh in the first flight of time trials. A solid drive from 4th to 2nd in heat race number one sent the #5 machine to the Craftsman Club dash, where Gravel finished 3rd.
“We really had to charge forward in our heat race,” said Gravel, driver of the GoMUDDY.com, J.R.C. Transportation Inc., C&S Lawn & Landscape #5. “We got behind in the time trials. For us to pick up positions was huge. We got to second in the feature and the track began to lay rubber with ten to go so we just kind of rode behind Brad (Sweet.)”
The team returned the following night to try to score the victory. Gravel timed in quickest overall, won his heat race and charge from 8th to 4th in the Craftsman Club Dash.
“We did more of what we wanted on Saturday night and that was qualifying quickest,” said Gravel. “We made the dash and got stuck with the eight pill in the draw. Our goal is usually to make up a row in the dash. We made up two and that set us up really well for the feature. I was able to slide by Brad on a restart to get second. Donny (Schatz) was running really well. I maybe had a little shot at getting passed him but caught up by a lapped car. Overall, though, we were really happy with a pair of second place finishes and we are ready for Nationals.”
The tour now swings through the fly over states of Nebraska and North Dakota. On Tuesday, June 13th, the series visits Eagle (Neb.) Raceway before heading north to River Cities Speedway near Grand Forks, N.D on Friday, June 16th and Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, N.D. on Saturday, June 17th.
“Eagle will be a fun track for me because I have never been there,” explained the Watertown, Conn. native. “River Cities (Speedway) is a place where we have been running really well and we’re looking forward to being there. It’ll also be cool to be back at Red River Valley Speedway. I was there last with the All Stars a few years back. It’ll be fun to be back.”
